It is easy to see why people choose wicker furniture. Wicker is durable but lightweight. Only if it is meant for the outdoors, either go for those without upholstery or else, ones that are weather resistant. The wicker itself must also be treated for the outdoors. Still, patio wicker sets are not as durable as aluminum, wrought iron or teak wood.

Nonetheless, wicker ages gracefully. And the great thing is that, wicker reminds people to relax,just what most people need. As well, wickers made tables are cheaper. As for colors, you get so much flexibility that you can even paint them to match the color scheme of your designs.

However, you may want to monitor children’s activities such as jumping on the wicker tables because the weaving can break. The woven pattern is what makes wicker different from other furniture.

Wicker has been around since the ancient Egyptian days. During those days, it was very common to find tools made from wicker and not furniture.

Also, the wicker today can be found in more variety such as vines, bamboo, willow and different kinds of reeds. The variety is also reflected in the results; one can find wicker tables, rocking chairs, ottomans and loveseats. As well, there are reproductions of Victorian furniture.

You can work with different styles and finishes to suit the concept that you want for your outdoor area. You would probably go for simple furniture but accessorize it with a neat cushion. Wicker can be categorized into two, loom woven and synthetic wicker. Loom woven is made from rattan, bamboo or cane while synthetic wicker is made from hand woven polyethylene, resin or fiber glass. Most of outdoor wicker furniture is coated with resin emulsion for better protection while synthetic wicker come with aluminum frame.

The strands of wicker are woven together when they are wet because it is pliable then. Only after it dries that the process of sealing, sanding and coloring can be done. They are usually lacquered in colors such as sage, bronze and pewter.

Rattan ones are very strong and will neither splinter nor break. Rattan grows to a few hundred feet in tropical forests. Rattan poles are used as couch frames or made into spiraling designs for arm rests and even for the backs of furniture.

If you want your wicker furniture to last a longer period of time, be sure to clean and coat it with protectant regularly. When vacuuming, be sure to follow the weave. When something is spilled on them, don’t wait to clean up. Do it instantly as wicker is very absorbent. You can also hose them but be sure to go easy on the water pressure.

If you are a real wicker enthusiast, you may want to get into learning how to repair your wicker furniture. Take a course in chair caning. Shop around for some repair kits online. Hey, why not give your ottomans and loveseats a new look by repainting them and tell your guests that you just got new patio wicker sets!

The Adirondack rocker is a staple of Western patio furniture design. Its distinctive oversized armrests and long, sloping back make it one of the most recognizable and popular choices of outdoor seating. From its beginnings in upstate New York, the Adirondack has evolved into a number of models, each uniquely designed and priced accordingly.

The most expensive Adirondack chair is actually divided into three sub-categories. First of all, name brand and well-respected chairs, like any other product, tend to cost more. For example, the Shakers are acclaimed for their woodwork, while certain name brands can afford to have higher prices because more people prefer them, thus demand is higher. The second reason for having an Adirondack rocker costs upwards o $300 is its age. Antique chairs are a hot commodity, and the ones that are durably constructed and made from hearty woods like teak can easily be passed for much newer chairs while representing a certain era in American history. Hence, they cost a lot. On the other hand, simply being old is not adequate criteria for antique hunters. Furniture that is in disrepair, is broken and not easily restorable has little value to collectors. The third category of expensive rockers is the one that comprises those fancy, crème de la crème chairs, many of which come with extra bells and whistles. For example, many an Adirondack rocker and glider are built specifically for use by pregnant women and new mothers because of their swaying motion which has proven calming ability both pre- and post-birth. There are also especially artistic, ergonomic and one of a kind, rare chairs that are deserving of the extra high price tag. Often the more expensive models are also provided with matching cushions for added comfort. The chairs are practical for both indoor and outdoor use, while many of the simpler rockers would look out of place anywhere but on the porch.

$200-$300

Most middle of the road rocking chairs cost approximately between $200 and $300. When you think of design, this is the classic Adirondack rocker you’re picturing. Made from nicer and consequently more expensive woods (like teak and western red cedar) than are cheaper models, these chairs often come with an attractive finish and won’t need to be re-oiled for a long time after initial purchase. Fine craftsmanship is exhibited in the detailing, the added lumbar support and rounded chair edges. Many of these chairs also come with their own drink holders owing to the wide arm rests, which all but does away with the need for a table.

$200 and less

Don’t be discouraged if you’re not looking to spend that much. For under $200 you can pick up a very decent Adirondack rocker. Many chair models around this price point have a specific design and are called Appalachian “settin” chairs. Their distinct form starts with the long back support of the Adirondack with or without armrests. Paired with the curved seat of the chair, the two sections together offer total body support. Often times, this type of Adirondack rocker is made using pieces of unfinished wood (like pine for example), laid out side by side in rows that taper along the top and bottom so that the slats are wider than a normal wood chair but not so wide as to feel uncomfortable. Many of these lightweight seats also have the luxury of folding up, so you can take them along to barbecues, tailgating parties and more.

Whatever your price range, an Adirondack rocker is a good investment. From the simple to the ornate, the cheap to the steep, this classic style of outdoor seating brings harmony to your living space and helps to melt away all those extra the worries in your life.

Outdoor gliders, rocking chairs, and swings all allow seated individuals to move in a back-and-forth motion. As long as their legs are long enough, they can propel themselves. Many people like these pieces of furniture because they find the back-and-forth motion to be calming and relaxing. Medical studies have validated the relaxation effect of rockers through the lowering of blood pressure and breathing rates, as well the relieving of lower back pains. Outdoor gliders, swings, and rockers have motion in common, but some characteristics set them apart-the space they require, their specific type of motion, and their seating room.

A glider takes up about the same space as a bench of its same length. It needs a little extra room so it doesn’t bang against a wall or railing when it glides, but it typically requires less room for its path of motion than a rocking chair. Of course, the longer the runners on the bottom of the chair, the bigger the space you will need when rocking. Swings, when hung from an overhead joist, don’t require a wide path. But a separate frame will require more room because the posts sit at a wider angle than the swing. If you have a space that’s long enough for a bench but not terribly wide, a glider may be the right piece of furniture for you.

Outdoor gliders have a different motion than swings and rockers. Unlike swings and rocking chairs, gliders have no arc to their movement; instead, they move on a flat plane. A glider’s motion usually feels smoother, as well. Often, people find a glider a little easier to keep moving than a swing or rocking chair.

Finally, outdoor gliders often seat multiple people. Rocking chairs frequently seat one adult. Sometimes you can find double rockers, but usually rocking chairs do not seat more than two adults. Outdoor swings usually seat more than one, but you may be afraid that the weight will place too much stress on a piece of hanging furniture or the hanging hardware, and you’re afraid the swing will crash to the ground. If you are looking for furniture that can comfortably seat three or even four adults, you may want to check your options for outdoor gliders.

To evaluate your space needs, the best thing you can do is determine where you will place the furniture. Measure the width, length, and height of the area. Keep the measurements handy as you shop.

To evaluate which motion you prefer, the best thing you can do is to try out some various pieces of furniture yourself. If you know friends who own these types of outdoor furniture, try theirs out and note which you like best. Or try some out at a local furniture or department store.

To evaluate how large a seat you need, imagine the people who are most likely to sit with you. Perhaps you can imagine both your spouse and your neighbor, but not at the same time. Or perhaps you envision two friends, or two grandchildren. Whatever pictures enter your mind, figure how many seats you will commonly need at one time. Take these three evaluations and shop accordingly.

There are several qualities that make Amish made furniture unique and desirable: The fact that it is not mass produced gives each piece of furniture an exclusivity seeing how no two pieces of furniture are ever exactly alike. Further, Amish furniture is always made from solid wood, never from particle board, fiber-board, or pressed wood. Generally hard wearing and long lasting hard wood is used, such as maple, oak, cherry etc.

Another thing that imparts a distinctive quality to Amish furniture is the fact that the designs are always timeless classics that never go out of style. Also the Amish use very distinctive joinery for making their furniture which makes it very resistant to breakage and makes it last practically forever! Techniques such as mortise and tenon joinery is used to this end. Also there are some items of old fashioned and charming Amish made furniture that lend a whimsical individuality to your home with their uniqueness.

Take for instance the goat wagons that certain Amish craftsmen still make based on the early German construction. These can not only be an interesting focal point of a garden or a unique decorative element for the indoors, it can also be a very functional object which can be used for moving logs to the fireplace, carrying fresh produce from the kitchen garden to the kitchen, or even for taking out the garbage!

I just bought a couple of natural color rocking chairs. They look like they’ve been stained and not sealed with some protective treatment. What’s the best product to use to protect my rockers from fading in the sun, the rain, and general cracking due to possible weather damaging?

You could get some plastic tarp coverings to insulate against the rain. Maybe there’s some kind of varnish you can buy to strenghten the material.

One of Maine’s greatest and often overlooked features is the Inns and B&B’s that exist everywhere. No matter what part of Maine you visit, you will find the Inn or B&B the best way to go. There are good, better and best Inns; poor Inns simply fail. Find an Inn that has been in business more than 5 years and you won’t be disappointed with your accommodations. Here, in no specific order, are some Inns worthy of a visit.

Bluff House Inn in Gouldsboro offers several guest rooms that are delightful with their nautical themed rooms that overlook a beautiful westerly ocean view. It is rare to find a place to watch the sunset in what is known as Sunrise County, but the Bluff House offers incredible sunset views. The Bluff House offers a basic continental breakfast in their lovely common room. One of the best features of the Inn is access to the ocean. Although the Inn sits on a high bluff, there is a road that leads down to the water which is perfect for putting in a canoe or kayak and it is an easy paddle out to Stave Island; a lovely island with no inhabitants but wonderful beachcombing opportunities no matter what the tide. This Inn is not an old restored mansion, but was built as an Inn and is fairly new. It is a nice Inn, but does lack some of the charm of an older Inn.

East Wind Inn in Tenant’s Harbor has a beautiful main building with flower gardens surrounding the porch that beckons you to sit a spell. The harbor is quiet and lovely and often the only sound you can hear is the tink-tink of the grommets on the American flag hitting the flag pole or a distant lobster boat out beyond sight of land. The meetinghouse building offers a huge porch with rocking chairs, antiques throughout, and a wonderful view and soft breezes from the bay. The restaurant here is an unexpected pleasure and reservations are advised even in this tiny town. It is understandable after eating there; the food, service and ambiance are exceptional, although a bit pricey.

The Todd House is Eastport is basic accommodations, but certainly pleasant. At one time, it housed the original Masonic Hall and one of the rooms on the second floor is full of Masonic regalia. The stairways in this Inn are very narrow and steep, the furniture is entirely original antiques and the atmosphere is pure history. Some of the rooms offer views of the bay. Breakfast is served in a lovely dining room every morning after 8 a.m. A room for a single is $70, which is quite an inexpensive way to get a taste of Eastport history.

The Milliken House in Eastport is truly a hidden jewel-you have to navigate to a side street in order to find the entrance to this beautiful B&B. Officially, the address is Washington Street, but the entrance is from the street behind the Inn. The entrance is through a lovely bright sunroom; I had to follow voices and maple syrup scents to find the innkeeper, Mary, in the kitchen. She showed me to my room, which has incredibly beautiful and well-kept antique furniture, a day bed plus my queen size bed. The bathroom is across the hall, but it is solely mine for the duration of my stay. It is large and bright; my room is smallish and a little dark, but it is lovely nonetheless. The house, like the Todd House, seems seeped in history, but the Milliken House seems that it once belonged to people who were well-to-do. The trimmings are ornate and large and pains have been taken to make sure that the Inn stays true to its past. As I look around, I can only imagine what this house might once have been and it is easy to imagine women in velvet gowns having tea in the sitting room, although it would have been horses and buggies going by the windows on Washington Street, not the cars and trucks of today. Small touches make guests feel very pampered and special. The towel in my bathroom has a monogrammed “B” on it, which I thought incredibly thoughtful; there is a plush white robe hanging in the bathroom for my use, and Mary is a whiz with names. She had no difficulty introducing all seven of her guests to each other over the sumptuous breakfast this morning and breaking the ice for conversation. I was surprised to learn that she has only been an innkeeper for eight years-she seems so at ease in her role as consummate hostess.

There are so many lovely Inns in Maine and the prices are as varied as the locations.
